Living Life Fully

It has been my great pleasure to write for a new, top quality, magazine focused on the growth of The Ottawa Valley. Ottawa Valley Living is a free publication where I get to write a monthly column about whatever aspect of Valley life that appeals to me. I get to meet the most interesting people, to drive the seductive back roads and byways of this gorgeous part of Creation, and to find new ways to express myself. http://www.ottawavalleyliving.ca

This not-for-profit organization’s website is dedicated to ‘new adventures in service for Americans over 55′ …Canadians may get lots of great ideas for how they can remain active, committed and engaged as they age. http://www.experiencecorps.org/index.cfm

I like this site because it speaks to the potential we all carry. This site is about a business created by a retired teacher. Her business is working with clients to document their family history and stories. Who knows, something like this may be the perfect project you’ve been looking for! http://www.familyvideolinks.com/index.htm

On my travels through The Ottawa Valley I discovered Jo Seggie, a retired doctor who has started breeding horses in her ‘retirement’. And not just any horses. Jo is the first person to bring the Paso Fino breed to the Ottawa area because the gait of this type of horse allows many people suffering from arthritis and spinal injuries keep riding well into old age. Jo is also a fine artist and author. Check out her site for both inspiration and to discover some great horses. http://www.artworkspasofinos.com

One of my former ‘wage slave’ buddies from my days in the telephone company is a principal in this great travel company, and he is another clear example of how wonderful life can become when you do what you love! They specialize in small, off-the-beaten-track tours with clients who are interested in culture, people and the environment. http://www.trailfinderscanada.com/index.htm

Being Jane provides access to advice, mentoring, support and a compendium of women-related information that leverages the experiences of women who have achieved non-traditionally female goals by actualizing their authentic beliefs and desires. Being Jane is committed to redefining the idea of feminism to symbolize women coming together to raise the bar, embrace the vitality of being a woman and champion the connection to future generations. http://www.beingjane.com/areYouJane.php

The shores of Nova Scotia have long seemed like heaven on earth to me! And now that I’ve made friends with Carole MacInnis, Innkeeper with a generous heart and a deep commitment to creating a very special place for her guests, my heart sings whenever I think of her beautiful Oceanstone Inn. Even if you can’t get there for a soul satisfying visit, check out Carole’s website and your spirit’s will be lifted. www.oceanstone.ns.ca

Another Canadian company specializing in the travel needs of us older folks. I haven’t worked with Elder Trek but I sure do love their website. http://www.eldertreks.com/index.php

This well known international organization is focused on life long learning and offers many trips and courses for older folks still vitally interested in life. http://www.elderhostel.com/

If you know someone who has received a diagnosis of MS, Eva’s site is a must-visit. Eva was diagnosed over 30 years ago and she has successfully managed her own recovery and now dedicates her life to helping others not be limited by this or other neurological disorders. Eva went so far as to get a B.Sc. in Physics and a M.Sc. in Engineering to better understand and combat this disease. You can also purchase copies of her popular book "Black Patent Shoes …dancing with MS". http://www.evamarsh.net/

Yoga and money? Jacqueline Richards, an Ottawa-based Mortgage Broker has not only made the link, she’s written a book about it! If you have issues with your personal finances, you may find Jacqueline’s website of real help. http://www.jacquelinerichards.com/

Speaking of money, it takes a special person to deal with the special financial needs of older adults. If you are getting long in the tooth or have parents who find that most financial advisors leave them feeling confused, you might want to chat with Noreen Mejias, a well-credentialed financial advisor who holds an Elder Planner designation and who specializes in working with older adults. http://www.noreenmejias.com

Parenting has to be one of the most formidable jobs in today’s world, largely because so many parents are engaging the process without the help and support of an extended family. Or if family is nearby, their views on parenting differ so radically from those of earlier generations that they are reluctant to seek support in that area. Grandma K is a shockingly young grannie who brings loads of life experience and great credentials to her work as a parenting coach. Having met her numerous times, I know that she could make a huge difference to any parenting bumping up against it with their pre-teen and teenage kids! http://www.grandmak.ca/

A definite must for anyone thinking about their career. Absolutely critical for anyone who hates their job, boss, colleagues or any other aspect of working in organizational environments. Ernie Zelinski will definitely rattle your cage with possibilities you never thought of! http://www.real-success.ca/index.html

An interesting webportal from which you can access all sorts of interesting (and weird) websites! http://www.societydirectory.com

SelfGrowth.com is the most complete guide to information about Self -Improvement, Personal Growth and Self Help on the Internet. It is designed to be an organized directory, with articles and references to thousands of other Web Sites on the World Wide Web. http://www.selfgrowth.com

"Spiritually Engaging" …yet not religious

Spirit Crossing is a website dedicated to those souls who are helping raise the mass consciousness and bring the connection between mind, body and spirit into the mainstream. You’ll find great articles (some of mine, even), products and people. http://www.spiritcrossing.com/

For those of you looking for a scientific basis for your exploration of the spiritual realm, this site associated with the University of Arizona and its Consciousness Conference will be interesting. http://consciousness.arizona.edu/tucson2006.htm

Much is happening in science that has implications for public policy and the future of mankind. The Center for Cognitive Liberty & Ethics (CCLE) is a network of scholars elaborating the law, policy and ethics of freedom of thought. Our mission is to develop public polices that will preserve and enhance freedom of thought into the 21st Century. http://www.cognitiveliberty.org/index.html

The Thinking Page is a site for those interested in the process of thinking, cybernetics and, systems thinking, creativity and associated conversations. I include it in my "Spiritually Engaging" section because it takes us beyond consideration of pure science. http://www.thinking.net/

This site has been set up as an open venture between scientists, scholars, meditators and all those who believe that we are approaching a conceptual threshold in our understanding of how physics, physiology and consciousness interact. http://www.emergentmind.org/

The mandate of Edge Foundation is to promote inquiry into and discussion of intellectual, philosophical, artistic, and literary issues, as well as to work for the intellectual and social achievement of society. http://www.edge.org/

More of an article than a web-site, this is an opportunity to explore how a different culture engages spiritually very differently than we do in our Christianized, western perspective. Living the Dreaming turns our world its ear in many respects. http://www.bri.net.au/livingbysandra.html

This interesting Italian based website proposes many ideas that bump up against our traditional notions of the mind, mental health and other issues. Will definitely give you something new to think about! Heavily oriented towards Gregory Bateson’s worldview. http://www.oikos.org/homeen.htm

This website explores the intricate relations between palpable experience and logical thought. Thinking with both. Haven’t explored it in depth but my suspicion is that it is a Therapy Model alternative to Quantum TLC™. http://www.focusing.org/index.html

Creativity & Art

Did you know that every April 21st is Innovation and Creativity Day? If you’d like to know more about this global, grassroots organization committed to helping us all notice our innate creativity, visit: http://www.creativityday.org

This site is targeted specifically for women exploring their creativity. Focus is on quilting and writing, specifically journaling but these are used as metaphors for the broader question of creativity in living. http://www.womenfolk.com/creativity/

This site has the lively and up-beat tone that I find appealing in websites. Contains lots of inspiring quotes about creativity, many articles, and access to other resources about creativity. http://www.creativityforlife.com/index.php

It was hard to decide which category in which to place this site. But creativity is its major message, so here it is. The site’s author is a retired psychiatrist who coaches and consults about creativity as well as actively engages as a painter. Interesting stuff here. http://www.adventuresincreativity.net/

This website clearly positions itself as exploring the creativity at work topic. It appears to span many of the arts (music, art, improve, etc.) and how they can make the workplace more innovative. http://www.creativityatwork.com/

I found out about this site from a young man (and brilliant artist) my husband tutors. Thanks Devon for turning me on to a site oriented to kids but extremely useful for an adult artist who is still learning the basics. Lots of ideas, projects and enthusiasm here! http://www.hitentertainment.com/artattack/

Career & Retirement

It isn’t always easy for those starting their careers to get great advice. This Canadian government sponsored website will be an invaluable tool for new comers to Canada as well as Canadian youth getting started in the workplace. http://www.canadaprospects.ca/products/cp_14/home.cfm

Workplace oriented, this site contains a number of short articles related to the retirement conversation. http://www.management-issues.com/display_page.asp?section=research&id=3404

Barbara Walker is a retirement coach based in Victoria, B.C. Her site includes audio materials as well as articles, books and many great suggestions for living well in later years. http://www.bmwalker.com/index.htm

PJ Wade is another Canadian coach and futurist who specializes in the business of retirement. Her site will be of interest to business types who offer products and services to the retirement market and who want to improve how they engage with that sector. http://www.thecatalyst.com/index.html

This is a blogging website that I choose to include in the ‘Retirement’ section because it contains many blogs that address the issues you’ll likely be interested in …and so much more! One of those sites you could easily get lost in as you explore the many, many conversations it offers. Third Age, by the way, is a term commonly used in Europe to refer to that time of life when the kids are grown, and we are looking for a new way to create meaningful futures for ourselves. http://blog.thirdage.com/

Canadian Association of Pre-Retirement Planners is an organization I’m a member of and its website will be of interest to anyone who is thinking about engaging this exciting profession. http://www.retirementplanners.ca/

Interesting Approaches to Business Conversations

Management Issues contains many interesting articles about a wide range of workplace issues, including retirement. Managers, HR and OD folks will likely enjoy what they find here. http://www.management-issues.com/display_page.asp?section=research&id=3404

Another blog-site with some very interesting and extensive articles all about the future of work. Will be of interest to HR types, OD types, facilitators and anyone interested in where the workplace is going. http://www.thefutureofwork.net/blog/archives/000338.html

My good buddy Mike DiLauro is an accountant with a very different take on money, what it takes to create a successful small business and thinking about your customers as fans not clients. Read some of Mike’s provocative articles at http://www.dilauro.ca/

Another one of my good buddies, Carlos Fox created Intento Int’l to increase the performance of and enhance the lives of executives. He is a coach and facilitator extraordinaire and will help anyone who has begun to notice that all human interactions happen one-on-one. Even when we are communicating to a group, we are effective only when we connect with each audience member as an individual. http://www.intento.net/

Consciousness & ‘Different’ Science

A site dedicated to exploring modern systems thinking in all of its forms. http://www.complexity.co.uk

The mandate of Edge Foundation is to promote inquiry into and discussion of intellectual, philosophical, artistic, and literary issues, as well as to work for the intellectual and social achievement of society. I’ve been getting Edge’s electronic newsletter for several years now and always make time to explore the interesting materials they have to offer. Definitely gets me thinking! http://www.edge.org

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from those three worlds. Since then its scope has become ever broader. The annual conference now brings together the world’s most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes). This site makes the best talks and performances from TED available to the public, for free. More than 200 talks from our archive are now available, with more added each week. We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world. So we’re building here a clearinghouse that offers free knowledge and inspiration from the world’s most inspired thinkers, and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other. http://www.ted.com

Epigenetics is a new branch of science that studies how traits can be inherited via mechanisms other than DNA. I first learned about Epigenetics from Bruce Lipton and have been pleased to discover just how fast-moving the discoveries of this new science are. Read this highly interesting article published by Environmental Health Perspectives. http://www.ehponline.org/members/2006/114-3/focus.html

This is a European-based website about Epigenetics. It is brought to you by The Epigenome Network of Excellence , a european research network dedicated to supporting high calibre science in the rapidly explanding field of epigenetics. http://www.epigenome.eu/

This link will take you to a BBC show about Epigenetics. Or as they say “ The Ghost in Your Genes – The scientists who believe your genes are shaped in part by your ancestors’ life experiences.” http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/tvradio/programmes/horizon/ghostgenes.shtml

The Global Consciousness Project, also called the EGG Project, is an international and multidisciplinary collaboration of scientists, engineers, artists and others. We have been collecting data from a global network of random event generators since August, 1998. The network has grown to about 65 host sites around the world running custom software that reads the output of physical random number generators and records a 200-bit trial sum once every second, continuously over months and years. The purpose of this project is to examine subtle correlations that appear to reflect the presence and activity of consciousness in the world. The scientific work is careful, but it is at the margins of our understanding. We believe our view may be enriched by a creative and poetic perspective. Here we present various aspects of the project, including some insight into its scientific and philosophical implications. …in other words, if you want to know about legitimate scientists pursuing investigations on the ‘bleeding’ edge of what we know about human consciousness, this is the place for you. Can it get much more legitimate than a place like Princeton University? http://noosphere.princeton.edu/

Products, Services, Support & Professional Development

These are the folks who have created both of my websites and are the web developers/website hosters that I recommend to all of my business coaching clients. Ottawa based, Rob Brooks and his gang can handle both large and small sites with a unique blend of creativity, flair, technical savvy, practicality and great pricing. http://www.imatics.com

If you live in the Ottawa area and need a plumber, I can highly recommend Dave to handle any job large or small. http://www.dsgroup.ca

I love to include great quotations in my articles and other written materials. I find many of those quotations at one of these two great Quotation websites: http://quotationspage.com or http://quoteland.com

For those of you who are based in the West end of Ottawa, Lisa Turpin and her In Balance Pilates may be just what you’re looking for. http://www.inbalancepilates.ca/index.html

Attention members of the sandwich generation. If your parents are aging and need more care and attention than you can provide, Comfort Keepers is part of a new wave of services that have developed to pick up the slack for non-medical care services that government agencies no longer provide. Yes, it costs money directly from your pocket, but with the focus Comfort Keepers places on hiring caring, interested and committed staff, you can be certain that your aging and ailing parents will be well looked after whether they still live at home or are in a care facility. http://www.comfortkeepers.ca

Noreen has been my personal financial planner for several years now and does an amazing job. She is a Certified Elder Planner which means that she has a special eye for the needs of clients moving into retirement as well as those who have already retired. Licensed in Ontario, what I like about Noreen is that she is always aware of the larger goals and issues in my life that are driving my financial needs and goals. http://www.noreenmejias.com

Need to send a special gift? Tina creates gift baskets out of almost anything and is noted for the fact that her gift containers are a gift in themselves. Make yourself truly memorable by sending a memorable gift. http://www.amemorablegift.com

This is a group of folks here in Ottawa who all have an interest in things spiritual and who meet for breakfast on the last Tuesday of every month at Zola’s Restaurant in Bell’s Corners. No membership; no business selling; no ‘religion’. Just a great opportunity for companionship and learning with an eclectic group of individuals who believe that there is ‘something more’ at work in our big old universe! http://www.thebreakfastwithfriends.com

If you have just started a business or operate one from your home (and you’re a woman!), Women in a Home Office may be highly useful to you. A national organization with chapters located across Canada, Women in a Home Office offers an opportunity to network and socialize with other women who, like you, work out of their homes. http://www.womeninahomeoffice.com

I’m a big believer in the power of networking, especially for growing your business. One of the most effective business networking groups I’ve been involved with for many years is the Business Breakfast Club. A national group currently with clubs in Ottawa, the Maritimes, Toronto and around The Ottawa Valley, you might want to consider bringing the organization to your community if it isn’t already there. http://www.bbc-on.ca

If you are looking for cutting edge books and audio products about human growth and evolution, you can’t do much better than this site. Of course I’m biased. As a co-founder of the WEL-Systems® Institute I was intimately involved with the development of many of them. Be advised that you should only engage this material if you want to achieve significant change in your life. Even though I am no longer involved directly with the Institute, I continue to use a WEL-Systems perspective in all that I do and regularly refer those clients whom I know are seeking more to these pages. http://www.wel-systems.com/products/index.htm

This is an elegant site selling elegant products such as journals, pens, and giftware. I’ve been purchasing their journals for years now and have always been pleased with what they have to offer and the service I’ve received. If you are looking for high quality writing products from Italy, France and Asia, your search has ended. http://kschweizer.com/index.php?main_page=index&zenid=835346716eca02b3f7d5201afa0d06ed

Another website offered by a friend of mine. Franziska’s site will delight you with wonderful photographs and art. You can purchase cards, photography services or even book a reconnective healing appointment with this multi-faceted woman! http://www.delphinusdesigns.com/

I absolutely love this site! It contains page after page of textured tiles that you can use as wallpaper and backgrounds in your documents and on your website. Sometimes I just go to look at the wonderous array of textures and colours …it must be the artist in me! http://www.feedfinder.net/webground/index_01.shtml

Another fun site, I’ve found this one useful for selecting buttons, tags, etc. for illustrating websites. The person who runs it clearly cares and takes great pride in what she produces. Still lots of free stuff and no annoying advertising, pop-ups, etc. http://www.photoshopgraphics.co.uk/buttons/buttons.html

I use this free teleconference service all the time when I need to create a teleclass or communicate with many clients at one time. It is also great for family members wanting to get together to chat when they live apart. Each person pays their own long distance so total costs are modest. Easy to use. All instructions are on-line. http://www.freeconference.com/Reservationless.asp
